Maria Wood-Smith

For twenty-one years, Maria Wood-Smith, owner and founder of the Fearless Focus Program and Maria Wood Studios in Pembroke, has been spreading her positive message of inner-strength and self-confidence all over New England.

Her work, not only in her businesses but also in her extensive community outreach, has allowed Maria to become a fixture on the South Shore, promoting self-confidence and self-love.  She has worked with thousands of kids, teaching them how to feel good about and believe in themselves and providing a safe place to express their individuality.

Maria understands the need to help all children learn how to cope with the ever-increasing stress brought on by school, social media, and the ensuing social anxiety brought about by these pressures.  She created the Powerhouse Program so that boys and girls of all ages can learn how to access their personal power and become their own powerhouses.

Jon Harnden

As a father of two children and somebody who was “bullied” as a kid, Jon understands how important it is to teach people how to gain self-confidence and learn how to deal with difficult situations. When he was a young child, there were little to no resources to help him with his situation. He was forced to learn on his own. Through playing sports, having a ‘never give up’ attitude and learning the importance of simply asking a question, his self-confidence grew. To his surprise, the bullying stopped. He was standing taller/prouder and realized that the world wasn’t so bad. The world wasn’t against him. He was no longer afraid.

With this new outlook about life, the future was limitless. It led Jon to a successful term with the Mass Army National Guard, a Rugby career spanning 20+ years and a job as a Personal Trainer. His two children know the importance of being empowered or being a powerhouse! He can’t help but be proud watching them stand up against bullying and actually teaching their friends about how to take life into their own hands and not letting anybody take advantage of them.

“I was on my own as a kid, learning this all by myself. It was difficult. The joy is, you are NOT alone. We are here for you. You can learn how to take control, stand taller, feel better. You will be a Powerhouse.” – Jon Harnden

Kyle Hamel

Kyle Hamel is a 29 year old musician, avid runner and weight lifter living in Cambridge MA and working in Talent Acquisition at a Tech startup in Boston.  Growing up, Kyle had a hard time connecting with other kids at school due to his shyness and social anxiety.

As he got older, Kyle found hobbies that helped break him out of his shell and connect with a growing group of friends.  He picked up the guitar and started playing pop Warner football in the 3rd grade.  By continuing to challenge his anxiety through social hobbies like playing in bands and competing in sports, Kyle was able to build confidence in himself, and in doing so made lifelong connections with a large group of close friends.

Kyle was lucky to have many positive role models in his life including supportive parents, siblings to look up to, coaches to listen to and friends to learn from.  He believes that everybody has the potential to grow and change through hardship into the best version of their genuine self, and that they deserve the support they need to do so.

Nick Mari

Nick Mari is 29 years old and currently resides in Weymouth with his fiancé and there rescue dog. Growing up, Nick’s family moved over 15 times constantly switching school systems – he was always “the new kid.” Because of this, he was forced to develop new friendships frequently, which was never an easy task. He has experienced his fair share of feeling uncomfortable and pressure to impress new friend groups throughout the years, making school-life an uphill battle.
Nick remembers being made fun of for his tall and lanky frame, but this ended up benefitting him in the long-run as a varsity athlete. He started playing football and basketball in elementary school and credits his coaches and teammates for helping him through difficult times in his younger years.
After graduating high school, Nick decided to enter into his family business. He owned and operated his family’s shoe repair business in Cambridge for over 10 years until his family decided to shut the doors. He bounced back and found a great career in banking. He is currently an Assistant  Branch Manager at East Cambridge Savings Bank.
In his free time, Nick loves to head to the mountains for ski weekends, experiment with new techniques in the kitchen, golf with friends and colleagues, and is an avid amateur bowler.
